In this farewell address, Horstmann asks what a research library does when scholarly work depends on many kinds of information beyond books. He proposes ten criteria for assessing a library's contribution to teaching, research and society, and applies them to the Göttingen State and University Library during his decade as director. The address combines examples of changing services, partnerships and management with thanks to the people who developed them.
