Reconstructed abstract

The article considers how virtual research environments and online tools could support the scientific workplace across the research cycle. It surveys funding programmes and technical requirements for finding literature, managing data, communicating, collaborating and publishing, then uses humanities research cases to examine current practice. The examples expose substantial manual effort and weak integration between tools. The authors argue that libraries and other infrastructure providers need to organise services around researchers’ workflows and address the resulting technical, organisational and security challenges.
